Welcome to the Autumn 2018 ACT|Project newsletter.
This international project, funded by Erasmus+, aims to recruit schools as a way of exploring how fundamental values, such as tolerance, inclusion and democracy, can be promoted through education.
Over the last few months, France, Spain, Greece and England have been working to complete the recruitment of schools for this project. To all schools who are taking part – it’s great to have you on board! There have been many meetings to finalise the project materials ahead of the teacher training scheduled for the autumn term and we are pleased to say this will shortly be complete.
The European Foundation Society and Education is responsible for the overall coordination of qualitative evaluation of the project. In collaboration with the evaluation teams of France, Greece and England, its Unit for Educational Observation and Evaluation (OyE) has designed and tested the questionnaires that will be used to measure the impact of the ACT Project.
Meanwhile, we are preparing for the next meeting of project partners due to take place in Greece. This will be a good opportunity to discuss any lessons learnt from the first months of implementation.

In March 2018, the government published a consultation on its Integrated Communities Strategy which set out its vision for building strong communities where people – whatever their background – live, work, learn and socialise together based on shared rights, responsibilities and opportunities.
In June 2018, the Greek government passed the Law 4547/2018 entitled “Re-organisation of the support structures in primary and secondary education and other provisions”. This law makes provision for the establishment of Educational and Counselling Support Centres in all regional directorates of education in the country, which aim to support school units to ensure equal access to education and training for all students, alongside supporting balanced psycho-social development.
The Spanish Government has committed to the promotion of professional training to prevent school failure and early dropout and a better transition between the education system and the labour market. This commitment aims to promote inclusivity and the development of school coexistence.
First results of National study on Citizenship Education in France
The National Council for School System Evaluation together with Sciences Po Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Nice-Sophia Antipolis University carried out a national survey on Citizenship Education in France between March and May 2018. Altogether, 16,000 students, 500 citizenship education teachers and 350 school principals responded to survey questionnaires. The first report capitalising on the wealth of information provided by the survey has just been published on the topic of student engagement – at school, outside of school, and in the future. It delves into the characteristics (individual and school), experiences and perspectives that either promote or impede civic engagement.
Citizenship in French school at a Glance – IFÉ Review n°125 (June 2018)
The Institut français de l’Éducation proposes research literature reviews in the field of education and training, which provide scientific and methodological input for the pedagogical thinking and action. The review published in June 2018 by Claire Ravez under the title “Regards sur la citoyenneté à l’école” / “Citizenship in school at a Glance” focuses on Citizenship Education, analysing its recent developments in France and questioning the objectives of the school on this issue.
Educational influences on young people’s support for fundamental British values
This research in the UK was looking into citizenship education in young people. The research found that the vast majority of respondents had received some kind of citizenship education in year 11 (age 15 and 16), covering topics such as crime and punishment, the media, Parliament and government and voting. It also found high support for fundamental values among respondents.
Euro-Med Youth Forum
“Sustainable Participation and Active Citizenship”, which was held in Larnaca, Cyprus, on 18th-22nd April 2018. This Forum was an initiative of the Erasmus+ National Agency of Cyprus and its Partner Institutions (including Greek National Agencies) in an effort to strengthen cooperation in the EuroMed area.
MEFP and the foundation Yehudi Menuhin through the MUS-E® programme, aim to work on the social, cultural, and educational inclusion of children using the arts as a tool for social transformation to promote social and cultural integration of underprivileged children to prevent violence and racism. It encourages tolerance among the different cultures reinforcing the creativity and intellectual development of children, as well as motivating them to learn.
New Erasmus+ project announced
“Gr.A.C.E.: Greek German matchmaking for Active Citizenship Education in Youth Work“ is a new Erasmus+ Project, which will be implemented within 2018 by the Faculty of Social and Educational Policy of the University of Peloponnese and the Association of German Educational Organisation.
